Drink Up It’s the Holidays – 3 Healthy Drinks that Heal and Soothe

As the holidays approach, we become inundated with “eat this, don’t eat that” and “drink this not that” advice from friends, family, bloggers, and news sites. It appears that everyone has an opinion, some more informed than others. This time I’d like to talk about beverages – the good, the bad and the ugly. Learn how you can protect your skin against sun damage and premature aging by sipping these 3 drinks. I’ve said it a million times but I’ll say it again, sunscreen is the first line of defense against sun damage. And now it has some help: the latest research suggests that these beverages may also deliver nutrients that protect your skin.

1. Green Tea
New research in the Journal of Nutrition gives us one more reason to sip this super drink. I prefer it iced with some mint but you can enjoy it hot or cold. Women who drank 4 cups of green tea per day for 12 weeks lowered their risk of sunburn by 25 percent, plus their skin density and elasticity, qualities that make skin look younger, improved. According to the study, powerful antioxidants in green tea called catechins absorb UV light, protecting the skin.

2. Coffee

That morning coffee can do more than boost your energy. A 2011 study out of Harvard Medical School found that people who drink coffee are less likely to develop basal cell carcinoma (the most common type of nonmelanoma skin cancer) than those who don’t. Moreover, the risk was lowest for those who drank the most. Drinking 3 cups a day lowered the risk by 20 percent for women and 9 percent for men. Researcher Fengju Song, Ph.D., thinks the caffeine in coffee helps reduce potentially cancerous UV- damaged cells by stimulating them to naturally die off.

3. Red Wine

Although white wine might be your sip of choice, preliminary research out of the University of Barcelona points to a new reason to choose red. Researchers found that proanthocyanidins, antioxidants found in red grapes, may help prevent oxidative reactions in your skin. Oxidative reactions, often stemming from sun exposure, can damage and kill cells, which in turn lead to sunburns, wrinkles and possibly skin cancer. Wow. I love all of these drinks but have always had some guilt surrounding my consumption levels. Now I am relishing the notion that as I indulge in my third cup of joe at my desk. I am encouraging my damaged (and potentially carcinogenic) skin cells to die off and go away. And even better, after the kids are asleep, I can sip a fine Bordeaux and revel in the knowledge that the proanthocyanidins are hard at work trying to prevent oxidative reactions to damage and kill my precious cells.

Life can be sweet. No mater the wine you favor or coffee you prefer, it’s important to remember that there is no substitute for good skin care and maintenance. Facial cleansers, toners and moisturizers are critical to ensure healthy, happy skin.
